On November 29th 2009 more than 60 National Leadership Council (NLC) members attended a reception with distinguished guests: Consul General of Germany Wolfgang Drautz and Diedre Berger, Director of AJC’s Berlin office and the Lawrence and Lee Ramer Center of German-Jewish Relations. The program was moderated by AJC Board member Marcie Goldstein. Deidre Berger spoke about her experiences as an NPR reporter on November 9th 1989, the day the Berlin Wall was torn down. The discussion covered the successes and challenges of reuniting Germany, reconciliation following the opening of the Stazi archives, nostalgia in former East Germany for the Communist era, and the role of education in fighting xenophobia and anti-Semitism.
Special thanks for graciously hosting this event go to Marcie and Cliff Goldstein, Joanne and Joel Mogy, Larry and Lee Ramer, Debbie and Naty Saidoff, Dr. Bill Sater and Elise Sinay Spilker, Sherry Weinman and Michael Umansky, and Dick and Marcia Volpert.
