More than 60 people gathered at UCLA’s Humanities building to watch “The Power of The Powerless”, an enlightening documentary about the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia 20 years ago and the new generation of Prague’s citizens. The screening, organized by AJC’s ACCESS program and UCLA’s Center for European and Eurasian Studies, was followed by a conversation with Ambassador Daniel Kumermann, Consul General of Czech Republic in Los Angeles, and Prof. Michael Heim, professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures. Kumermann, a Jew from the Czech Republic and former Ambassador to Israel, spoke of his family’s suffering under Communism and his experiences as one of the signatories of Charter 77, a milestone document in opposition to the Communist party and the movement towards democracy.
