AJC Highlights the Remarkable Improvement in Polish-Israeli Relations
The American Jewish Committee will be hosting Polish Ambassador to Israel Agnieszka Magdziak-Miszewska and Israeli Ambassador to Poland David Peleg on a unique mission to the United States in an effort to highlight the strong relationship and strategic partnership between the two nation-states.
From 1968 through 1990, the two countries had no diplomatic relations following Communist Poland's anti-Semitic campaign after the 1967 Six Day War. Ever since Israel and Poland re-established diplomatic relations in 1990, they have created an impressive political and economic partnership. Poland is now one of Israel's strongest allies in Central and Eastern Europe and remains America's closest ally in the region.
Poland has long been a special interest of AJC. Given the tragic history of the Jewish community during Nazi Germany's occupation of Poland and decades of Communist oppression, AJC has continuously supported the efforts of the small Jewish community to rebuild itself. AJC has been leading reconciliation efforts between Poles and Jews, initiating innovative annual exchange programs, dialogue groups, and has regularly meet with Polish leaders in Warsaw and Washington. In 1995, AJC was the first nongovernmental organization calling for Hungary, Czech Republic, and Poland's accession into NATO.
The Ambassadors will tour Los Angeles on March 6th and 7th. They will also visit San Francisco and Washington D.C.
