AJC Honors the Past, Welcomes the Future, Brings the Community Together


LA Chapter President Fredrick S. Levin, Chairman Sherry A. Weinman, and former President Peter Weil

On April 16, AJC held its 63rd Annual Meeting to honor outgoing LA President Sherry Weinman and vote in the new Executive Board of the AJC for 2008. Newly elected President Fredrick Levin spoke about his vision for the year and thanked Sherry for her three years of service. The lunch was highlighted by an invocation by Latin University of Theology President Manuel Tigerino and a keynote address by MIchael Granoff of Project Better Place - an investment company enabling an electric vehicle revolution in Israel and around the world. AJC LA Receives Szabad Award for Outstanding Chapter Program

AJC conferred the George and Shirley M. Szabad Chapter Achievement Award to the Los Angeles Chapter for its outstanding work on energy security. The awards, originally named in honor of the late Shirley M. Szabad, a long-time AJC leader from Westchester (and, later, Philadelphia), was presented at the 102nd Annual Meeting in Washington D.C. in May to Energy Security Committee Chair Nadine Gerson and AJC Chairman Sherry Weinman. AJC Hosts Latino Jewish Seder

 

On April 14th 2008, Rabbi Mario Rojzman and Randy Brown led 40 pastors and their families for their first ever Passover seder in Spanish. AJC Hosts Inaugural African American Jewish Connection Seder


After an inspiring mission to Atlanta and Birmingham to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the assasination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., AJC with Brother Crusade, SCLC, and First AME Church hosted a seder at Wilshire Boulevard Temple in Los Angeles. The evening was highlighted with song, food, and a customized Haggadah that portrayed how both our communities embrace the Exodus narrative. LA TIMESJEWISH JOURNAL. MORE HERE.

AJC CA Goes to Sacramento to Advocate for Energy Independence

AJC's Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego and San Francisco Chapters spent two days in Sacramento focusing on energy independence. Read about it here. Participants heard from R. James Woolsey, former CIA director, and Robert Hertzberg, former California Assembly Speaker. AJC also met with experts from the state legislature, state agencies, and advocacy organizations about California's energy opportunities. The group met with 20 state legislators urging the reduction of California's oil consumption. This was the first time AJC's California Chapters coordinated together a mission to Sacramento to lobby for a legislative issue. AJCLA's energy program.

Israel at 60 - 'Where do we go from here?' with Dr. Moshe Halbertal

 On a special trip from Israel, Dr. Moshe Halbertal, professor of Jewish thought and philosophy at Hebrew University and a fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute, shared an informative and dynamic briefing on "israel at 60" with members of AJC's President's Council at Hillcrest Country Club. A renowned author and speaker, Dr. Labertal was the recipient of the Goren Goldstein Award for the best book in Jewish thought in 1997-2000. AJC celebrates Israel@60. Hidden Children of Greece


Alexandros Mallias, Ambassador of Greece to the US, Kitty Dukakis, Governor Michael Dukakis, AJC Pres. Sherry Weinman, and AJC Exec. Dir. Seth Brysk

The Greek Consulate General in Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Office of the American Jewish Committee organized the exhibition HIDDEN CHILDREN IN OCCUPIED GREECE, presenting the stories of 16 Jewish children form Greece, who escaped death during Greece's Nazi occupation with the help of their Christian compatriots.  The Exhibition is co-sponsored by the Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel and the American Friends of the Jewish Museum of Greece. Over 600 people attended the program and reception at the Opening Night reception. The exhibit will be open until April 15th at the Sephardic Temple.

AJC Middle East Office Director Updates LA

More than one hundred attendees gathered at Brentwood Country Club for a private reception to hear a Middle East update from Eran Lerman, AJC's Jerusalem Office Director. Hosted by an outreach committee of Brentwood members led by Jackie and Howard Banchik, the event offered a unique opportunity to learn about the work of AJC in Israel. Kansas Gov. Sebelius Honors Cathy & Len Unger with Award

 Torrential rain failed to dampen the spirits and enjoyment of the many friends, family members, and community leaders who came to Skirball Cultural Center to celebrate as Cathy and Len Unger received the Ira E. Yellin Community Leadership Award. The Ungers received the award in recognition of their leadership in our community and their efforts in promoting democratic values, tolerance and understanding among diverse people. Individually and as a couple, their dedication and commitment have helped to advance the cause of human rights.READ NEWS RELEASE.

Chanukah Party Brings the LA Community Together

Hosts Barry Freeman and Robbin Itkin light candles

Diplomatic, political, religious and civic leaders in Los Angeles joined members of the Chapter's Board of Directors at the lovely home of Barry Freeman and Robbin Itkin to celebrate Chanukah at AJC LA's annual 'Festival of Lights' celebration. Speaking at his first Chanukah in LA, Executive Director Seth Brysk, spoke of the warmth the LA community extended to him on his arrival. Attendees included new Israeli Consul General Jacob Dayan in one of his first public appearances, Congressman Howard Berman, and Keith Atkinson from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

AJC & UCLA Conference Focus
on Polish Jewish Relations


Leading international scholars, Polish and Israeli government dignitaries, leaders of both the Polish American and Jewish communities and Master of Ceremonies Broadway's Theodore Bikel gathered Tuesday at The Regency Club in LA to hear highlights from the AJC sponsored conference"From Past to Present: The State of Research in Polish Jewish Relations" at UCLA.
